forWord
They are forWord, an arts collective with an emphasis on spoken word and creative writing. They aspire to encourage self expression, connect with other poets, and improve our creative skills in the process. The group is made up of four members who met while students in the spoken word organization Uncultivated Rabbits at the University of California, Irvine. After graduating, forming a new group after U.R. was always in the back of their minds, but one day, after having dinner at a Cheesecake Factory they decided to put their aspirations into motion. In the fall of 2010, Susan Diep, Eddy M. Gana Jr., Mark Maza, and Stephanie Sajor decided to form forWord. Unsatisfied with the daily grind of post-college life, they were set on continuing to be creative outside of Uncultivated Rabbits, the only spoken word scene they were really exposed to in Orange County. And before they knew it… forWord was born.

Robby Ravenwood
What can be said about Robby Ravenwood that hasn’t already been written on the bathroom wall?! Robby Ravenwood is a singer-songwriter, stand-up comedian, and social satirist, who performs his musical stand-up act in the sardonic tradition of Tom Leher, Randy Newman and Dan Hicks. He plays piano, keyboards and guitar in an adroitly light-hearted musical style that blends elements of Gypsy-Jazz, Lounge, Klezmer, Folk and Western Swing. His music, combined with his ironic, social commentary, creates the unique musical stew he calls “Un-Easy Listening” Robby’s affable personality, upbeat vocal style, and cheerfully animated music, combined with his tongue-in-cheek, socially critical lyrics, playfully skewer the modern absurdities of this world; creating an energetic yet slightly edgy atmosphere, that has become his trademark on stage. Among many places throughout Southern California and the West Coast, Robby has performed and hosted at The Ice House, The Comedy Store and The Improv in Los Angeles, as well as at many coffee houses, chic country clubs and a few select truck stops (Hwy. 5 mostly). He also has performed for executives at Sony/MGM and Paramount Pictures. Robby was recently featured in the metaphysical DVD and book “The Secret”. While in wait for his upcoming E.P. release, one can find Robby on robbyravenwood.com

Kat Sayarath
Kat Sayarath's poetry is a merge of prose, vignettes, and critical theory. She is currently working on a project titled "Out of Body", a compilation of poems in conversation with the immigrant body but does not only pertain to immigrants. She is interested as to how bodies become familiar with its sphere and what boundaries (imaginary and/or physical) must it transcend to attain clarity and if it ever does. The compilation explores themes of global, sexual, and mental borderlands in the fragmented narrative. Her thematic question is, must the immigrant body always be a nomadic noun?

Lisa Verlo
Lisa Verlo was born in Flint Michigan to a Norwegian father and a Midwestern mother. Being raised in France, the Philippines, and South Dakota, gave Lisa a broad perspective on culture and societal concerns which found little reciprocated understanding in our mainstream voices. Attracting attention singing a capella and reading poetry in Los Angeles area coffee houses, Lisa was accepted into the Screen Actors Guild after performing her original work in the feature film Under Surveillance. While recording and singing with an eclectic group of musicians, Lisa had two songs featured in the film "Galatea's Wish" on Showtime. Verlo took her show on the road, touring the coffee house 'circuit' between festivals across the country, promoting her chapbook "Pieces" and CD of spoken word and music titled "Home". Back in Los Angeles, Lisa teamed up with guitarist and composer Frank Simes to write and record more songs for film and TV and together they released a CD of Children’s music titled Turner’s Treehouse and collaborated on a Broadway bound musical "The Door". After diving into the experience of motherhood Lisa Verlo is resurfacing in the Los Angeles poetry scene with new work seeking to dramatize an insight of aesthetic and humanitarian purpose. Lisa Verlo will be featured as part of Moms Write San Gabriel Valley at the Friends Café Poetrypalooza 2012 event on Saturday August 4 in Monrovia.

Formed in the beginning of 2011, Cogito embellishes the right to preserve rock and roll. Their name derives from the Latin phrase, Cogito Ergo Sum, which means “I think, therefore, I am.”
The young quintet just breaking into their 20’s has already experienced the riff raff of what goes on in the extremely polluted and in-sincere music scene of a big city. When most groups feel the stress and pressure that being in a band can bring, they become discouraged and possibly just give up. Cogito is the opposite and thrives on embracing positivity and triumphing over things that are in the way of them reaching their goals of touring and reaching out to people in a real way, utilizing the natural emotion and energy created by a live performance, to connect with listeners globaly. They never lose sense of why they create: it is their passion.
When the previous bands and projects of the members were not fulfilling their musical and creative needs, the five locals established a bond that would prove to be with-standing.
Exhausted with observing the diluted and over-produced music that current bands deem as rock music, Cogito aims to revive the organic aspect of what rock once was.
Cogito pairs hard hitting riffs and memorable melodies with a memorable verse-chorus song structure. The band prides themselves in the content, in which the nuance is surely opposite of the tonal delivery. Their sense of creating poetically driven vocals and energetic guitar coupling is what shines through the mix of current bands. They write songs that can be replicated in any instrument notation, not digital sequences. Keeping the music and essence of their sound as an organic production is their personal taste and foundation of their songs.
Their first phase of live performances after the release consisted of showcasing their record all over Los Angeles, playing some of the most legendary venues in rock & roll, such as The Troubadour, The Whisky A-Go-Go, The El Rey Theatre and the House of Blues to name a few. They have consistently been luring more and more fans from their seemingly endless live show circuit in Los Angeles.
The eclectic roster of songs is what drives the band forward and always captivates a live audience. Having such a mix of influences from all over the board, Cogito ensures delivering something for every rock enthusiast or any music lover that can appreciate solid songwriting, unique tonality and soulfull energy.
The self-titled record was written, recorded, produced, packaged, and distributed by the band itself, along with artwork, digital media, screen printing, and creative consulting. It was released in April 2011. Perfecting their craft is a constant task that is the top priority for the band as a whole, paying attention to detail and sacrificing major things in their individual lives. The band is propelled by an eagerness and hunger to share their music worldwide, for life.
The follow up release, “MAN O WAR,” was released in November 2011 and it is a 3 song EP. “MAN O WAR” is their stepping stone of material that captures their progression of their sound as a whole, creating a more edgy and catchy canvas of songwriting. They retreated to the sunny California coast in Ventura and recorded their songs in a live setting at Castaway 7 Studios with producer J.P. Hesser. An extended sophomore record is expected in summer 2012.
While many just envision success and dreams, Cogito actively pursues their dreams, making every goal tangible. All is obtainable through time and the band thrives on pushing their drive, and creativity to the next level.

Idiot Savant
Idiot Savant is a Los Angeles-based band comprised of Mars Klif on guitars & wicked effects and Scott Nichols-Collier on words & off-kilter bass guitar. Their music is a lot like a freight train to a blind man, or a free bag of Skittles, or a night with a blind man for a deaf woman. Your mileage may vary. They are pleased to grace the stages again at Poetrypalooza, as their first public shows took place at the very first Poetrypalooza.
Scott Nichols-Collier is a musician & wordsmith from Los Angeles. He is a founding member of the word rock band Idiot Savant, a practising ceremonial magickian, & a card-carrying tarot interpreter. He lives in a bright purple & green house with his wife, three wise cats, & a rather impressive library of tarot art & subversive literature. His work has appeared in restaurants, insurance claims centers, & sales offices throughout the Southern California area. Among his shambling, catholic interests are home gardening, film, peoplewatching, social structures & their consequences, & intoxication. He is currently composing several pieces of music with the hopes of finding dancers who would be willing to interpret them through the medium of dance. He maintains a relatively infrequent blog at thegoodlordlady.wordpress.com.

The Red Bonnet Hologram
The Red Bonnet Hologram is the concoction of artist, writer, musician Nick M. It is an open collaboration band through which Nick and revolving members can discover, experiment, and share new avenues of music and awareness. Nick M is a Los Angeles native, has been writing and performing music for as long as he can remember; performing in and around the SoCal area and playing as far as San Francisco. In February 2012, the EP Strangely was released under the moniker Pretend I Went to The Beach.
Nick M’s Strangely EP is marked by its lo-fi sound, a decidedly non-conformist approach, and deceptively dark and uncompromising look at self-identity through sexual and intimately strenuous relationships.
His work has been described as experimental folk but is simply enjoyed best with an open ear to its range of musicality and deep lyrical subtext.

SkyPiea
Every 1,000 years.
SkyPiea is made up of two young gentlemen that have at least two things in common; first, the infatuation with the story of a rubber man, following his course up and through an island in a white sea of clouds, known by the same name (Sky Piea), and second, their inability to avoid playing music.
"What kind of music does SkyPiea play?"
Lately they've been writing bossa nova and jazz ballads. Older songs include funk and 60s pop styles. SkyPiea doesn't attempt to mix styles, as much as they enjoy their attempt at playing them straight.
"Who writes the songs--or do they ... both?"
I'm not sure why there was a hesitation; actually, it's different for each song. Sometimes one will have a complete song and sometimes only a piece. The other will add his own flavour to it, as needed. Even in the case of a completed song from one, the other member will always add his own accompaniment to the song.
"How long have they been playing together?"
The band's first performance was in 2007.
Any other questions?
"Uuhm.."

He loves the magnificence of nature and its many settings as well as the pulse and stimulation of city streets with awareness of the beauty that springs forth from each.
Tony Dirk Brennan
At 4 years old, Tony “Noise” Brennan was introduced to Michael Jackson’s music by his mother. He was hooked. Whether dancing around the house or singing along, Noise was enthralled. Now his musical tastes include his inspiration, MJ, and underground hip hop (Zion I, Jurassic 5, Brother Ali, Benefit, etc.). Speaking of Brother Ali, in September, The piecemakers featuring Noise will be opening up in San Diego for Brother Ali at Porters Pub. The music Noise listens to must have substance, it must have a message or a purpose. Likewise, the music Noise makes is purposeful and intentional.
For the past five years Noise has been creating music with his God-given instrument, his mouth. Beatboxing is often an unrecognized, yet integral part of hip hop, and it will continue to live on through artists like Noise. Inspired by Roxorloops and Beardyman, who are his 2 favorite beatboxers, Noise began to find enjoyment in rocking crowds with a mic and muscle/breath control. He is also part of an Underground Hip Hop group with his open mic companion, Antonio aka Paz1, called Soul Anchor Collective. This year, be on the lookout for Noise at local open mics (Long Beach) and featuring on tracks with all of Soul Anchor Collective's other artists.

Barry Schwam
A transplant from a galaxy far, far away, I communicate with poetry and with my trusty theremin.. the earth's only musical instrument played without touching it!
If you have looked into your mind's eye too deeply, then you might have seen me dancing around in there. Don't worry. Just blink a few times, and I should disappear!
Reality is always greener on the other side...

BROTHER JUDE
Otherwise known as Henry Olivas, is a graphic artist, who can't decide if he's a painter who happens to write, or an poet who happens to paint. He's been constructing poetry, etc. off-and-on for at least 30 years, and has authored several self-published chap-books, including "An Ode to Logic," "Brother Jude Goes Fishing," "Funeral Beach Party" and "Mass-Hallucination Bakery." The latest of these is either called "Corporate Happy-Talk" or "Your Ad Here," depending on the circumstances. Henry has also been a member of Poets in Distress, a group of guerrilla poets who once roamed the San Gabriel Valley and beyond. Presently he is co-founder and vice-president of the historically-minded Monrovia Latino Heritage Society and tries to remain creative while maintaining a busy schedule.

Nicole Fournier
Nicole Fournier's passion for photography was first expressed during a 4th grade trip to Washington DC, when she snuck away from her group to photograph a spiral staircase. Many years later, Nicole honed her skills at university by obtaining a B.F.A. degree in Graphic Design – alongside a minor in Photography – graduating Cum Laude in her class.
Nicole has 16 years of experience working in Photography and Publishing. She assisted many photographers in event, lifestyle, portrait, and wedding photography. Nicole's work has been exhibited in several galleries throughout the United States, and in the UK. Her photographs have been published in textbooks, science journals, and Shutterbug Magazine.
Her early photographic style centered around concepts, shooting people in abandoned buildings. In the late 90’s, Nicole began experimenting with industrial imagery with an emphasis on pattern and texture. In 2006, she moved from Jersey City New Jersey to Los Angeles. Longing for her earlier style of concepts with a poetic flair, and along with her longtime interest in encaustic wax paintings, she decided to experiment with encaustics and image transfers. She enjoyed the medium very much, and returned to her earlier interest; producing artwork with concepts of self-growth in mind.
Currently residing in Los Angeles, Nicole Fournier enjoys pursuing her photographic career in art and commercial photography. For more information, please visit http://nicolefournier.com.

Sylvia Wan
Sylvia Wan was born on March 14th of 198...... well, the cool years before the iPhone came out. Forced to be artistic in an amazingly skilled family made up of makeup artist as a sister, fine artist as a mother, and sculpture as a father.
Sylvia, as u can see, is an artist of the imagination. You can tell her mind is everywhere by the style of her drawings. The concept of her drawings is that she can NOT draw. If u look closely at her drawings, it's pieces of different body parts or objects she has thought of to connect to each other, bringing pieces that doesn't makes sense, but together creates a sense of emotion and story.
Each character has an emotional attachment to those who looks deeper into the work. Sylvia uses her art as a vessel to express these emotions. Viewers can capture a sense of belonging and hope, a sense of never letting go.
Sylvia's inspiration for all her drawings is a broken heart.
